Cancun Travel Guide: The Best Things to Do in Cancun, Mexico 🌴

Planning a trip to Cancun, Mexico? Whether your idea of the perfect vacation is scuba diving in the Caribbean, taking a boat to Isla Mujeres, dancing at Coco Bongo, or spending an entire afternoon relaxing on the beach, Cancun has something for you.

One of the things I love most about Cancun is that you can make your vacation exactly what you want it to be. You can book an all-inclusive resort, unpack your suitcase and barely leave the property, or use Cancun as your home base for adventures throughout the Riviera Maya.

I’ve done a little bit of both, and these are some of my favorite things to do in Cancun.

Why Visit Cancun, Mexico?

Cancun is one of those destinations where you can have several completely different vacations in the same place.

Want adventure? Go scuba diving or snorkeling.

Want an island escape? Take a boat to Isla Mujeres.

Want nightlife? Spend a night at Coco Bongo.

Want to relax? Find a beach chair, order a drink and listen to the Caribbean Sea.

And if you don’t want to plan anything at all, Cancun has countless all-inclusive resorts where you can spend your entire vacation eating, drinking, swimming, relaxing and enjoying the beach.

That flexibility is one of the biggest reasons Cancun continues to be such a popular vacation destination.

Best Things to Do in Cancun

1. Go Scuba Diving in Cancun 🤿

One of my favorite Cancun experiences was scuba diving.

If you’ve never experienced the underwater world around the Caribbean, scuba diving gives you a completely different perspective of your destination. Instead of simply looking out at that gorgeous blue water from the beach, you get to actually experience what is underneath it.

Scuba diving in Cancun can be a great activity for both experienced divers and people who want to try something new, depending on the excursion and certification requirements.

If scuba diving isn’t for you, snorkeling is another way to explore the water and see marine life without committing to a full scuba experience.

Travel tip: If scuba diving or snorkeling is high on your Cancun bucket list, consider planning those activities earlier in your vacation so you have flexibility if weather or water conditions affect your plans.

2. Take a Day Trip to Isla Mujeres 🚤

A day trip to Isla Mujeres is another Cancun experience I absolutely loved.

You can take a boat from Cancun and spend the day enjoying the island, exploring, eating, shopping or simply relaxing by the water.

The boat ride is part of the experience. There’s something about being out on the Caribbean with the sun shining and the turquoise water surrounding you that instantly puts you in vacation mode.

If you’re searching for Cancun excursions or things to do near Cancun, Isla Mujeres is an easy one to add to your itinerary.

You can make the day as active or relaxed as you want. Explore the island, spend time at the beach, grab lunch, enjoy a drink and take in the views before heading back to Cancun.

3. Spend a Night at Coco Bongo Cancun 🎉

If you’re looking for things to do in Cancun at night, Coco Bongo is definitely an experience.

Coco Bongo is known for combining nightlife and live entertainment, so it’s much more than simply going to a club.

Expect music, dancing, performances, lights and a high-energy atmosphere.

If you’re visiting Cancun with friends or you’re looking for a fun night out, this is one of the experiences that can give you a completely different side of Cancun compared with spending the day at the resort.

Just don’t expect an early bedtime. 😂

4. Relax on the Beach 🏝️

Not every day of your Cancun vacation needs to have an itinerary.

In fact, some of my favorite moments are the ones where I didn’t have anywhere to be.

Cancun is famous for its beautiful Caribbean beaches, and sometimes the best thing to do is simply enjoy them.

Find a beach chair, put on sunscreen, grab your favorite drink and spend a few hours listening to the waves.

There is something very satisfying about having absolutely nothing scheduled.

And if you have a busy excursion planned for the next day, a quiet beach day might be exactly what you need.

Should You Stay at an All-Inclusive Resort in Cancun?

If planning excursions, restaurants and activities sounds exhausting, an all-inclusive resort might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Cancun has a huge selection of all-inclusive resorts, ranging from adults-only properties to family-friendly resorts and luxury beachfront hotels.

The biggest advantage is convenience.

Your accommodations, meals, drinks, pools, beach access and resort entertainment can all be in one place.

You can wake up, have breakfast, walk to the beach, spend the afternoon at the pool, get ready for dinner and enjoy the resort without ever needing to figure out transportation.

And honestly?

Sometimes that’s the vacation you need.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with booking your favorite all-inclusive resort and plopping yourself there for a week. 🌴🍹

Cancun Excursions vs. Resort Relaxation

The best Cancun vacation doesn’t necessarily mean doing the most.

Think about what you actually want from your trip.

If you’re someone who loves adventure and exploring new places, plan a few Cancun excursions. Scuba diving, snorkeling and an Isla Mujeres day trip can fill your vacation with experiences you’ll remember long after you get home.

If you’re exhausted and desperately need to relax, book the resort.

Beach. Pool. Spa. Dinner. Repeat.

And if you’re somewhere in the middle, do both.

That’s my favorite way to travel.

Have a few days where you explore and a few days where your only responsibility is deciding whether you want to sit by the pool or the ocean.

How Many Days Do You Need in Cancun?

For a first trip to Cancun, I’d aim for around 5 to 7 days if your schedule allows.

That gives you enough time to experience some of the popular Cancun activities without turning your vacation into one giant checklist.

A sample Cancun itinerary could look like this:

Day 1: Arrive in Cancun and relax at your resort.

Day 2: Scuba diving or snorkeling.

Day 3: Beach and resort day.

Day 4: Isla Mujeres day trip.

Day 5: Relax, explore Cancun and enjoy dinner.

Day 6: Beach day followed by Coco Bongo.

Day 7: Slow morning, one last swim and head home.

Of course, you can completely rearrange this depending on your travel style.

What to Pack for Cancun

Cancun is definitely a destination where you’ll want to pack for both beach days and going out.

A few things I’d make sure to bring:

• Swimsuits

• Lightweight dresses and cover-ups

• Comfortable sandals

• Sunglasses

• Sunscreen

• A hat

• A beach bag

• Comfortable clothes for excursions

• A cute dinner or nightlife outfit

• Waterproof phone pouch

• Portable charger

• Reusable water bottle

And don’t forget something cute for those vacation photos. 📸

My Favorite Way to Experience Cancun

If I were planning my ideal Cancun vacation, I wouldn’t choose between adventure and relaxation.

I’d do both.

I’d stay at an all-inclusive resort where I could come back and completely unwind after a day of exploring.

I’d schedule a scuba diving adventure.

I’d take a boat to Isla Mujeres.

I’d spend one night experiencing Cancun nightlife at Coco Bongo.

And I’d leave plenty of time to sit by the ocean with absolutely nothing on my schedule.

Because that’s what makes Cancun such a great vacation destination.

You don’t have to choose one type of vacation.

You can have an adventure in the morning, a beach day in the afternoon and a night out after dinner.

Or you can spend the entire day in a beach chair and call that the perfect itinerary.

Both are valid.

Final Thoughts: Is Cancun Worth Visiting?

For me, Cancun is one of those destinations that makes it easy to create the kind of vacation you actually want.

If you’re searching for things to do in Cancun, there are plenty of excursions and experiences to keep you busy.

If you’re searching for the best Cancun all-inclusive resort experience, you can spend your entire trip enjoying the property and the beach.

And if you want a little bit of everything, Cancun gives you plenty of options.

My favorite Cancun memories include scuba diving, taking a boat to Isla Mujeres, experiencing Coco Bongo and simply relaxing by the ocean.

Sometimes the best trips aren’t about seeing absolutely everything.

They’re about finding a few experiences you love, slowing down enough to actually enjoy them and leaving already wondering when you can come back.

And knowing me, I’ll probably be checking flights before my suitcase is even unpacked. ✈️🌴😂
